I have been teaching across secondary, FE, and HE since 2009, across the Performing Arts and English. I am also a graduate of the MA Dramatic Writing at Drama Centre (Merit), with nineteen years industry experience. I have trained for over four years as an actor in various settings and been directing for almost twenty years, including events for theatre, comedy, circus, film, music, and more. During this time, I have been able to work alongside incredible talent organising and assisting on events that take place across London, the UK, Europe, and over to the USA and the rest of the world. Alongside my nine years in education working across Secondary, FE, and HE settings I have developed a methodology built on years of continuous professional development – learning from directors such as David Lan, Matthew Dunster, Irina Brown, Joe Hill-Gibbons, Mike Alfreds, Patrick Marber, Elen Bowman, and Ian Rickson.
I have long understood that there are certain fundamental principles to creativity, that form a bedrock, and I am aware of the difficulties faced – in different ways and at different stages – by actors taking their first crucial steps at School, College, and University.
I have a huge desire to see creativity thrive and I consider it a force for change and a force for good. This desire stems from having worked in non-theatre spaces with non-actors from the very young to the very old, including those excluded from mainstream education and Refugee participants. I am also a producer for Art School which partners’ education with leading industry contacts to champion Drama in Education and the Industry – most notably I have worked with John Tiffany on this (director Harry Potter & The Cursed Child).
Having been employed across different settings, as a teacher I recognise that people taking part in creativity are different, with different requirements and needs, concerns, and preoccupations – they develop at different rates. I have been trained to respond to individual requirements, and to tailor accordingly. I endeavour to be sensitive and discreet, looking to inspire people to achieve. I have no difficulty in teaching innovative work from the classics to new writing to devising. I have long understood how to prepare students to learn, use what they learn, and express their understanding in innovative and fun ways.
Over the years I have managed mature teams and collaborated with artists to create work across a variety of settings. I have always been respectful towards the people I work with, mindful of their contributions and wisdom. Over my career I have accrued hundreds of hours in workshop contexts experimenting with work, mostly text, but also in improvisation and devising. My organisational skills and project management are exemplary, working across micro budgets to well-resourced events and entertainment.
I have extensive experience of handling large teams, as well as small portable teams and I consider myself an excellent communicator. I have worked with people from all over the world, from professionals to amateurs – and the newly embarked to the seasoned. As a result of this I have an outstanding network of artists to draw upon and this has added value to my students’ experiences through inviting guest artists to workshops and providing opportunities for them to progress at University and within the industry.
I consider myself a team player with a positive outlook, looking to always build a rapport and consequently cause things to happen on time. I can prepare students to succeed in their training and can help them get to University. Increasingly, my interest in arts and culture is built on the idea that there is more that unites us than separates us – and within that conviction I hold a deeply held wish to communicate and cross barriers, building cohesion, consolation, wisdom and understanding. I now have HoD experience at King William’s College and The Henrietta Barnett School, this has been energising, galvanising, and inspiring. Going forward I intend to focus on education full time and bring my considerable industry knowledge. I have exemplary subject knowledge and the ability to pass this on in innovative ways.

I consider theatre a robust and adventurous course of study. It constantly asks for exploration, fascination, and innovation. It is a course of study that builds internationally minded theatre students and enthusiasts.
Drama creates students who have an adroit approach to problem solving, building relationships, team work, and innovation. The industry they are going into is on a par with the automotive industry for economic value and needs creators and innovators. Helping tomorrows creative innovators and makers find the first steps to developing their creativity remains as vital as ever.
I value my professional relationship with students; I hold a huge desire to see them thrive and express themselves. I have always relished an environment where creativity is valued as an asset for expression – not simply as a luxury but as a fundamental experience for those who want to have it. Drama can contribute to the journey of students who can use their knowledge to go on to contented and successful lives – in whatever field they have chosen to achieve this.
My application of Drama in the classroom is built on my training at The Institute of Education and having contributed the work of several successful departments. I’ve worked with drama as a means of debating, learning, testing, developing, experimenting, feeling, thinking, and intuiting since before I began teaching as a career. In addition, I understand the rigours and requirements of teaching and a syllabus of study that has a clear progression where students can gain proficiency and on to mastery in developing their ideas and points of view and crucially testing them in an environment that allows for different ideas, voices, and possibilities.
Drama allows students to reassess as much as confirm what they know, might want to know, and could go on to experience in one of the most democratic ways we have available. Drama is a response to the needs of the moment in accordance with the ascertained truth of the moment and as knowledge and wisdom progresses so does the understanding that we are in a world that needs students to say ‘this is me and I’m making it happen.’ It encourages pro-active engagement with ideas, and it creates an understanding that it’s a big world – and we can make our mark. And it is enormous fun working out how to do that.
