My background

Hi there! My name is Lydia and I am a CELTA qualified English teacher who has been teaching English as a Foreign Language for 4 years. I have a first class BA (Hons) in Languages and Linguistics (I speak Italian and Spanish).

The majority of my work has been in an independent English school in Cambridge, as well as in Italy, India and Hungary. I have taught people of all ages, ranging from toddlers to adults. I also have extensive experience teaching preparation courses for English academic exam IELTS.

I teach from the perspective of student and teacher: languages are one of my passions and I know how it feels to be at all the different point of the language-learning process. It’s full of ups and downs, and I love to give encouragement and knowledge and hence instil the confidence that I at times have lacked in my path as a languages student.

Whilst aiming to cram in as much learning as possible, I like to bring fun to my lessons and to get to know my students well enough for them to feel comfortable making silly mistakes with me. It’s the only way to learn! My lessons are student-centred, with a heavy emphasis on speaking, pronunciation and vocabulary. I will never let an error go unnoticed, and love to see my students’ English rapidly improve through having their mistakes pointed out to them and then analysed and understood in a relaxed environment. I enjoy explaining rules (where they exist in English!) and love to broaden the vocabulary of my students, through advanced adjectives, idiomatic expressions and uncommon words. My enthusiasm for adding colour and individuality to my students’ English is contagious!

I always get great feedback from my students, who claim they learn much more new vocabulary in my lessons than usual, and find them interesting and fun. I have tutored students in the run up to the IELTS exam (and CAE and FCE) and every student has succeeded in achieving their desired result.

Experience

In February 2016 I completed the CELTA (Cambridge English Language Teaching to Adults) and have since worked on and off in a prestigious independent language school in Cambridge, England. Straight after receiving this qualification I briefly taught vocational English in a Hungarian secondary school, and for the past four summers have taught in English summer camps, as well as throughout the year. In winter 2016 I worked as a voluntary English teacher at three state schools in Rajasthan, India. And before my teaching qualification, as part of my degree, I worked as an English Language Assistant in a middle school in Sicily, Italy for a year, through the British Council (In 2013-14). Since 2013 I have been working as a freelance English tutor to supplement my wages.
