My background

Hello! My name is Jacqui Brooke and I am a retired primary school teacher.
I specialise in teaching English to primary school children and English as a foreign language to non-native English speakers.
I have a BA Hons in English and a PGCE in primary education. I also have an advanced certificate in TEFL.
My approach is very child centred and holistic.
Through working with your child, I will rapidly gain an insight into those areas needing more attention. I feel it is also incredibly important to involve your child in this ongoing process, by asking what they need help in - somewhat overlooked in most busy classrooms. In addition, this makes learning natural and more engaging.
My lessons involve the use of creative and sensory resources and accommodate all types of learners.
Of course, I follow the statutory requirements of the curriculum and appropriate key stage levels of attainment.
I also use previous examples of SATs tests, when appropriate, to consolidate learning and familiarise my pupils’ with expected attainment.

My favourite thing about being a tutor is knowing you are making a real difference to someone's life. Human beings thrive when given the right opportunities for learning. Obstacles to understanding can be picked apart and replaced with a “what works best for you” approach. The best part of tutoring is witnessing a pupil's LIGHT BULB moment when it all falls into place and you hear them say, “ I get it !”

Experience

I have worked in a variety of primary schools both in West London and South Gloucestershire for over fifteen years. During this time, I taught numerous children from many diverse backgrounds, some of whom spoke very little English. Within my role of a classroom teacher, I did of course attend multiple EAL and professional development training courses. These, greatly enhanced my ability to differentiate my lesson planning and as a result, significantly promoted my pupils’ understanding and learning.
In addition to being a classroom teacher, I have also been employed as a 1:1 tutor by my local education authority. In this role, I was specifically working with year six students focusing on improving their literacy skills for S.A.T.s - with a particular focus on comprehension skills, writing composition, spelling, punctuation and grammar.
I have also been a face-to-face private tutor for three years, working with children aged between six and twelve.
