My background

My teaching approach is that all students are capable of being excellent English students, and with a little guidance each student can make progress every lesson. I try to make learning English a fun and engaging activity, so I encourage as much conversation as possible. I try to tailor my lessons to each student so that they are personal and involve the student's interests and hobbies.

I encourage practise in the four main areas of the subject: Reading, Writing, Speaking and Listening. I feel this is the best way for students to build their confidence and to develop their key skills.

At the end of each lesson I always focus on areas of strength and one area that can be developed further, but always with a thought of the student's well-being too.

Experience

I qualified as an English teacher in 2016 and have since taught across Key Stages 3 and 4 using the AQA syllabus (Macbeth, Jekyll and Hyde, A Christmas Carol, An Inspector Calls, Power and Conflict Poetry, Language Papers 1 & 2). I have also trained as a marker for AQA on the English Language Paper 2 exam and so have extra experience in this syllabus. Previously to this I have 9 years experience working in secondary schools as a Teaching assistant and an EAL assistant so have great experience working with SEN or EAL students too. I have also delivered masterclasses in poetry, fiction and playwriting, as well as facilitating preparation sessions for students participating in Debate Mate.

I am a great lover of English and so enjoy teaching the subject and seek to inspire the same feelings towards learning in the students I teach. I believe that all students are capable of learning but sometimes they might have barriers to the learning, and so with my experience in SEN and EAL I am able to support students in becoming confident in themselves to then become successful English students. I have taught students from all attainment levels, so I am able to support students at the lower end of attainment who might need a little confidence boost, as well as stretching students at the higher end of attainment by providing access to higher level and theoretical texts.
