My background

I graduated from the University of Oxford in 2013 with an undergraduate degree in Experimental Psychology, and completed my Primary PGCE (Maths Specialism) at UCL in 2016. I am hard working, positive and committed to delivering the highest standard of teaching I can.

I value an understanding of why and how maths works, not just following and memorising procedures. I like to use a range of visual representations and discussions of problems, alongside traditional `sums`. This supports students to build a comprehensive understanding of mathematical concepts.

As a tutor I aim to provide lessons that are as pupil-centred as possible. This means meeting the tutee at their current level of understanding, building on their existing knowledge and guiding them to work through tasks themselves. I want my students to develop the ability to think independently rather than just accept an enforced way of thinking.

I also believe that it is very important for the tutor-tutee relationship to be friendly and open. In order for tutoring sessions to be effective, the tutee should always feel able to be honest about what they do and don`t understand. I aim to encourage this by creating a friendly, comfortable environment in which questions are encouraged, and the tutee is very welcome to contest anything they don`t agree with!I graduated from the University of Oxford in 2013 with an undergraduate degree in Experimental Psychology, and completed my Primary PGCE (Maths Specialism) at UCL in 2016. Experience

I am a qualified primary school teacher (Primary GCSE Maths Specialism, UCL) and have worked as a class teacher for just over 3 years. As a tutor, I particularly enjoy teaching Maths up to GCSE level.

I previously gained experience tutoring primary school aged children as a volunteer for Jacari, an organisation set up in Oxford to help children who don`t speak English as their first language. I have also tutored several students in Maths and English, in a paid capacity. Before I started my PGCE I worked as a Learning Support Assistant in a junior school, leading a variety of literacy and maths interventions with lower attaining children.

I believe I am skilled at listening to students` concerns, isolating where problems or misunderstandings lie, and finding a way to solve issues by explaining things in an accessible way and/or prompting the student to work through things themselves. Having been an Oxford student, I also have considerable experience of being a tutee myself, with many different tutors. After having both positive and negative experiences, I am very aware of the qualities a good tutor requires and seek to emulate these.
