My background

I am a final year, final-stage PhD student at the University of Portsmouth, under the supervision of Prof. Alder Vrij, Dr Sharon Leal and Prof. Galit Nahari. My PhD is an investigation of multiple methods to identify individuals who lie about their identity, and the thesis contains five empirical studies. In addition to my PhD, I have also worked as a Research Associate (RA), under the supervision of Prof. Aldert Vrij, which I began in October 2015, funded by the High Value Detainee Group (HIG) and the Centre for research and Evidence in Security Threats (CREST).

Experience

, I have undertaken the Graduate Students' Professional Development course and look forward to developing my teaching profile through the Apex Pathway. I am currently a PTHP lecturer within the Department of Psychology at the University of Portsmouth delivering lectures on Biological Forensic Psychology, Research Methods and Individual Differences and Psychometrics. As an example of my mixed approach, in psychometrics lectures, alongside verbal and visual descriptions of early indicators of psychopathic behaviour, I introduce videos to allow students to be able to associate visuals with that of the spoken and written word. I have also given lectures related to Deception Detection to Level 7 (MSc) Forensic Psychology students. As an L4 tutor, I provide the basis for their Exploring Psychology unit, academic and personal support. I appreciate that within such a small group of individuals, learning styles and competencies vary, and I support this through allowing students to bring information to tutorials in a manner which is beneficial to their own personal development. I am also an RBL supervisor, allowing L5 students an opportunity to gain hands-on research experience and have worked with numerous volunteer Research Assistants within the Department of Psychology. I always work towards independence, by allowing assistants opportunities to run studies alone. I believe this increases their confidence and thus their overall ability to tackle their L6 dissertations.
I have assisted with marking for Level 5 Introduction to Psychological Science, Individual Differences and Psychometrics, Research Methods and Final Year Project Interviews. I, therefore, have experience of teaching and marking at HE level and within the department. I have also given introductory lectures at Portsmouth Grammar School (PGS) in lie detection and helped coach a PGS student in preparation for her Oxford University interview. The individual was subsequently offered a conditional place at Oxford to study Experimental Psychology.
