Hi there,

My name is Leah and I am a geographer by nature as well as education. I love all things geographical and hope to share this love with all my students.
I am aware that sometimes geography is a subject students find it hard to get enthused about, or find confusing in its very broad scope, but I believe with the right tools and approach anyone can come to find their own interest in the subject. And of course if you (or your child) already enjoys geography then I’m sure we’ll have a wonderful time uncovering the mysteries of the Earth together!

I spent the 7 months prior to the UK outbreak of Coronavirus travelling in Nepal, India and South East Asia, so I have plenty of photos and stories from my travels that I can use to illustrate certain geographical processes and phenomena. Upon my return I had planned to get a job as a geography teacher as I completed my PGCE in 2019 and am qualified to teach Secondary Geography, however the global health crisis that is Coronavirus has very much hit pause on those plans, and so I am hoping that I can still contribute to student’s understanding of geography as an online tutor during this difficult and uncertain time.

Furthermore, I have some expertise in coaching students for exams and on writing essays generally, so if you or your child need help in these areas with a different subject, I would still be happy to help. :)

Experience

I have not tutored online before, but in 2019 I completed a PGCE in Secondary Geography which involved 2 school placements where I taught geography 4 days out of 5. Therefore, while I have not held a teaching job as yet, or tutored before, I have a lot of very recent experience of teaching my subject as a PGCE is 80% teaching practice and only 20% university-based learning.

After a full year of weathering the Coronavirus pandemic, and many months spend learning at home, I am aware that many students must be feeling intensely overwhelmed by upcoming examinations for which they may not be properly prepared. I hope that i can provide some clarity and direction to students in this situation, and am happy to help them craft personalised study routines for any and all subjects if this would be helpful. I chose home-education as the subject of my undergraduate thesis and was home-educated as a teen myself, so I have a good background in self-directed learning. In addition, if any of my tutees have an Special Educational Needs, I have been working as Learning Support Assistant at an SEN school for the past 6+ months, which has taught me how to cater to these needs in a variety of ways including the use of auditory and tactile teaching methods and using colour and imagery to reinforce learning.
