A highly self-motivated, diligent, and reliable soon-to-be graduate in politics and philosophy, with extensive experience in customer-service, educational tourism, and producing and promoting academic research.

Experience

I would be an ideal online tutor. Firstly, I have shown that I possess the punctuality and good time-management sought by W Tutors through work experience such as my time as an Enrolment Officer at Loughborough College. This job consisted of enrolling new students to the College computer systems over the summer before the start of the academic year, both in processing students' details in face-to-face meetings and in inputting the information on remote entry forms. This was a process that demanded excellent organisational skills, as I was required to input great amounts of data accurately, in a very tight time-frame, and with clear enrolment targets set to firm deadlines. Similarly, my work as an assistant gardener for John Bradley Gardens involved completing demanding garden management tasks, carried out at multiple different sites in a given day according to a strict timetable. It was therefore important that I commit to high standards of time-keeping and complete tasks methodically in order to be able to meet the rigid targets of the John Bradley Gardens organisation.

Secondly, I am highly responsible, and can be relied on to take the initiative both in delivering high-quality tutoring as well as in interacting with tutees in a good-natured but professional manner. I have shown responsibility of the former type in my work on the Laidlaw Scholarship in Research and Leadership programme during my undergraduate studies. The programme provides students with funding in exchange for completing an independent research project over two summers, as well as a leadership skills training course. In not only completing my own research project successfully, but in also publishing my work as a paper in a peer-reviewed journal and in presenting it at multiple academic conferences, I have proven myself to be highly self-motivated and capable of working independently on major long-term projects. My experience as a Laidlaw Scholar thus demonstrates that I can succeed in managing and handling private tutoring with Scholar Hub. As for responsibility in working with child tutees, my work as an Enrolment Officer required the completion of a safeguarding training course, which gave me the knowledge needed to provide support to student enrolees in dangerous or unsafe circumstances. This was a significant responsibility that I took on appropriately.

While I do not have experience in one-on-one tutoring, my previous employment has allowed me to develop many of the skills in communication that are important in education. For example, I have already noted that I presented my Laidlaw Scholarship research on panels at multiple academic conferences. These short (ten-minute) presentations involved condensing down complex ideas and arguments down into an accessible, easily understandable format intended for an audience with no familiarity with the theories and scholarly debates I was addressing. It is very similar skills in explaining concepts and conveying information clearly that are needed in one-on-one tutoring. In addition, my work as a Volunteer House Interpreter at the 1620s House & Garden at Donington le Heath involved conducting guided tours of the historic House & Garden site, providing historical information to visitors and answering questions. My experience in this highly interactive form of educational tourism has further helped me in developing the communication skills important in tutoring.

I am a soon-to-graduate, final year student at Durham University. Hence, while I have been unable to supply a final degree certificate, I have attached my most recent statement of marks, which indicate that I can expect to receive upper-second class honours. I am applying to provide tutoring in Mathematics, but would also be prepared to tutor in French and Statistics, as I have received an A grade at A-Level in all three subjects. I would also be prepared to provide tutoring in Economics and Philosophy/Theology, both of which I have studied for my undergraduate programme.
