I am enthusiastic for bringing out the best in young learners, teaching them how to learn and develop an interest for the subject is a challenge I enjoy. Seeing a student understanding something new has always been special to me. It is far more enjoyable to give students techniques to aid them in their learning, instead of just forcing them to memorise lists. I find this is not only beneficial for them academically, but later in life after school.
I have been teaching science since I qualified as a teacher at the end of 2000. Over the years the science curriculum has changed enormously and has put a lot more emphasis on application of knowledge.
Through my tutoring I will help my students get to grips with the basics and then train them to being able to apply their knowledge, utilising a variety of different resources from the traditional worksheets right through to online labs and demonstrations, all of which are relevant to the student’s school exam board..
I operate a student centred approach, working first to ensure a strong foundation of core concepts, and then expanding on these to develop understanding of more complex topics, which can then be applied to exam-style questions.
There has been a big increase in the relevance of maths in science (particularly at GCSE level) so this will be an area of focus in my tutoring, to help guide my students through some of the pit falls they may experience in exams. By tutoring with a patience and enthusiasm I aim to boost confidence and competence.
A student who is interested in a subject is more likely to be able to access the information. I encourage parents and carers to discuss with me what they are looking for in terms of a tutor and how best I will be able to achieve this. I believe that if I can have a positive effect on just one student in terms of the ability to achieve their potential then I have done my job.
