While it is important to put the hours in during exam season, developing effective study habits will also play a huge role in your success. So here are some ways to study smarter in 2025.
SET CLEAR GOALS
Before diving into your studies, set specific and achievable goals. Whether it's locking down a particular topic or completing a set number of practice questions, having a goal will give your study sessions direction and purpose.
ACTIVE LEARNING
Reading your notes is not enough for an effective study session. You need to actively engage with the material to retain information better. Test yourself with flashcards, try teaching the concept to someone else, use online quizzes etc.
CONSISTENT STUDY ROUTINE
Consistency is key to effective learning. Set a schedule that aligns with your energy levels - whether you're an early bird or a night owl - and also plan which topics you want to cover and when. Sticking to a routine will hold you accountable and makes it a lot easier to remember what content you have already covered.
DISTRACTION-FREE ENVIRONMENT
Your study environment will impact how productive your sessions are, so find somewhere quiet, silence your phone, and remove anything else that might distract you. Some people prefer a space that is cosy & relaxing, and others somewhere that is tidy, it’s up to you.
REGULAR BREAKS
Studying for hours without breaks can lead to burnout. Follow techniques like the Pomodoro Technique - study for 25 minutes, then take a 5 minute break. Short breaks help maintain focus and improve information retention, and are also a great opportunity to refuel and stretch your legs.
USE MULTIPLE LEARNING RESOURCES
Chances are, you’ll become bored studying from the same textbooks and notes, meaning that you’ll be less engaged. Add practice papers, online videos, educational websites, such as Quizlet, to add some variety and boost engagement.
PRIORITISE SELF-CARE
Taking care of yourself is one of the most important aspects of having a successful year and exam season. You can revise and work hard but if you’re tired and burning out then you won’t reap the rewards. Get enough sleep, eat well, get outside and exercise, and make time for socialising and hobbies.
