i WEEKEND: Putting Your Child's Safety First

SECURE CHILD PROTECTED, ONLINE TUTORING YOU CAN TRUST

The global pandemic has catalysed online education for children with home-schooling and online tuition seeing strong growth since March 2020.  With the possibility of returning to school for UK children pushed back to Easter, normality seems very far away and this lack of structure and social interaction is having a detrimental effect on children’s mental health.

Parents are doing the best they can, and online tutoring has become a popular option to support home learning. Safety online, however, is a paramount concern. Kids are online more than ever today and parents need help understanding the ramifications of what they are watching, and if they have a tutor, the possible lack of tutor checks. Making sure our children are safe when online and have the support they need is a governmental and parental priority.

Surprisingly, the private tuition space has no DBS regulation at all. It is left completely up to a parent to find out if a tutor is acceptable without any resources to help them make the best decision. This loophole must be closed as it’s risking the online safety of children. The government have, in effect, failed to regulate the safety of our children.

Tanvir Malik Mukhtar, CEO of Scholar Hub, an online real-time tutoring platform that has nearly 6,000 fully vetted tutors said, “as a result of the lack of government regulation to protect the learning safety of our children, I started working on designing an online only tuition platform called Scholar Hub, allowing parents an informed choice of tutors. I wanted all educators of children under 18 to be either DBS checked or have enhanced, digital background verification checks as a strict policy.”

Undergoing criminal background checks should become a compulsory requirement across the board. Scholar Hub pride themselves on safety and being able to give parents peace of mind whilst pushing to challenge this loophole on behalf of all parents helping make the internet a place we can all trust.
