Advice for Student Tutors

Being an ace at your subject and having amazing grades does not automatically mean that tutoring will be easy for you, so here are some of Scholar Hub’s tips for students who are looking to start tutoring:

  1. Get a DBS check - If you are registering to tutor with an organisation, such as MyTutor, an enhanced DBS check will be required from you anyway, but if you are setting out on your own, this is still important. While it may seem like an unnecessary cost, more and more parents are making this a priority when looking for a tutor and it will help you get clients.
  2. Consider tutoring online - As a student, you already have a packed schedule most of the time, so tutoring online will eliminate travel times as well as costs, and will also make available to you a wider range of students.
  3. Get to know your student - Find out their learning style, strengths, and weaknesses. Everyone learns differently and by finding out these things as soon as possible, you can adapt your teaching to make it the best it can be!
  4. Plan & Prepare - By planning & preparing each of your lessons you will not only be more confident teaching the content, but you can also make sure it is clear and easy to follow.
  5. Use your own experience - While everyone learns differently, you have the benefit of having been taught this same content fairly recently and so you know what works and what doesn’t.
  6. Be patient & encouraging - Remember that you’re tutoring this subject because you’re great at it, and your student is there because they need help with it. The things that come easily to you might not for them, so bear that in mind. Encouragement will boost their confidence.
  7. Be flexible - There will come a time when you have to explain something in a completely different way to help your student understand. Be prepared for this.
  8. Feedback - Provide your student with regular feedback and make sure they give you regular feedback too. This will lead to the best tutoring experience for both of you.
  9. Maintain professionalism - While there may be a small age gap between you and your tutor, it is important to stay professional so that they can take the tutoring seriously and achieve their academic goals.
  10. Variety - include a variety of exercises and teaching materials to keep things interesting and engaging.
